Lawn Installation

By Bestcare Gardeners (bestcaregardeners.co.ke)

Sometimes a lawn needs more than repair, it needs a fresh start entirely. Whether it's a new compound with bare soil or an existing lawn too far gone to save through patching alone, turf laying delivers an established, green lawn far faster than growing one from seed.

What Turf Laying Involves

Turf laying starts with preparing the ground, clearing debris, leveling the soil, and improving drainage where needed before any grass goes down. Skipping proper ground preparation is one of the most common reasons a newly laid lawn fails to establish well, since uneven ground or poor soil quality undermines even good quality turf.

Once the ground is ready, rolls or slabs of pre-grown turf are laid out in a staggered pattern, similar to bricklaying, so the seams knit together evenly rather than lining up in visible rows. The edges are trimmed to fit the shape of the compound, and the turf is firmed down to ensure good contact with the soil underneath.

Choosing the Right Grass Type

Different grass varieties suit different conditions, whether that's shade tolerance, foot traffic, or climate. Kikuyu grass is a popular choice for many Kenyan compounds thanks to its durability and ability to recover quickly from wear, while other varieties might be chosen for a finer, more manicured appearance in lower-traffic ornamental areas.

Caring for Newly Installed Turf

Fresh turf needs frequent, consistent watering in the first few weeks to help its roots knit into the soil below. Foot traffic is kept to a minimum during this period, since the turf hasn't fully anchored itself yet and can shift or tear under too much pressure. Mowing doesn't start until the grass has properly rooted, usually a few weeks after installation depending on weather conditions.

Why Turf Laying Beats Starting From Seed

Growing a lawn from seed takes weeks or months to fill in, during which time bare soil is vulnerable to erosion, weeds, and uneven growth. Turf laying delivers an instantly green, usable lawn, cutting out that vulnerable establishment period almost entirely.
